Greta Hietpas

Minister of Children and Families

Tell us about yourself
I grew up in DePere, WI and graduated from UW-Milwaukee and UW-Madison. My husband Brian and I have three teenagers who keep us busy. Prior to accepting a call to ministry, I was a high school biology teacher, taught English in Japan, worked for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and was a stay-at-home mom. I joined the staff of First United Methodist Church in February 2009. After completing licensing school in July, I was licensed as a local pastor in September 2009.

What do you do as Minister of Children and Families?
My focus at First United Methodist Church is pastoral care and advocacy for children in 5th grade and under, their families, and their teachers. My primary responsibilities include the Sunday school program, Vacation Bible School, and the nursery.

What is the best part of your job?
Learning the role of pastor in such a positive environment. The staff and the congregation are so supportive and encouraging!

What do you think you would be doing right now if God had not called you to be in ministry?
I’d like to think I would be singing and dancing on Broadway but in reality I’d probably still be a stay-at home-mom trying to figure out what she wanted to be when she grew up.

What talent do you wish you had?
I’d like to sing and dance well enough to be on Broadway.

If you could be doing anything right now, what would it be?
Traveling around Europe with my husband.

What is your favorite place on earth?
Can I have two?
Nepal and the Cinque Terre in Italy.

What are you currently reading?
Assigned reading for my seminary classes.
