John Sheaffer

Organist

Tell us about yourself
I grew up next to a country store owned by my Dad in northwestern Illinois. I had five brothers and sisters and all of us took piano lessons; I started when I was nine years old. I’ve been an organist since I was fifteen. My college degrees, from North Central College and Illinois State are in theater; however, the insurance business became my fulltime job until I retired in 2009. I live with my partner Tim on a beautiful acre in Pewaukee, and our two grown sons and twin grandchildren are a great joy.

What do you do as the Organist?
I play for the traditional service on Sunday mornings and for special services and funerals and weddings throughout the year. I’m also responsible to see that the organ is maintained properly. On that note, in 2009, the organ was completely rebuilt and some additions were made to it. It is a great joy to play.

What is the best part of your job?
Music is the language of my soul, and I love breathing life into pieces of music that move people’s hearts. Preparing and offering service music on Sundays is wonderful, but I think my greatest joy comes from leading and supporting hymn singing.

What is your favorite book?
“Conversations with God” by Neale Donald Walsch transformed my understanding of spirituality and faith. I use what I learned from it every day.

Do you have a collection?
Tim and I collect oriental rugs, late 19th century Asian art and antiques, antique cut glass, and older Hummel figurines (we’re both German by heritage and there’s just something about those cute little German “kinder”.

Do you have pets?
We have three incomparably great dogs, Edgar,Sasha, and Chloe as well as a couple dozen Koi in our pond..

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
Less fear: more love.
